Hello las sages, Its I the wise one Cameron, Hope you doing good, So today I'll be talking about Colorism, I was hinting it in the last blog, so today we going to write about it.

So lets find out "What is colorism" according to Google Wikipedia colorism is "a form of prejudice and/or discrimination in which people who share similar ethnicity traits or perceived race are treated differently based on the social implications that come with the cultural meanings that are attached to skin color" The difference between racism and colorism is "racism is discrimination outside your race while colorism is discrimination in your race."

Now that we understand what colorism is , so we know that according to society the lighter your skin the more beautiful you are, if we were to name at least 2 deeply melanated celebrities who are extremely famous in the last 5 years we cant, while black women are extremely famous like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and so such fourth, they are still "light skinned" , Black women with lighter skin ,straighter hair and more Eurocentric features are more likely to break through societies barriers than darker skinned women with 4c hair and more African features like voila Davis or Lupita while they are both successful dark skinned women they don't have the privileges' like the others do.

Sorry to Interrupt but can we just talk about

how powerful Beyoncé look in this picture

This phenomenon goes all the way back to the days of slavery where the lighter skinned black slaves were given domestic work whereas the darker skinned black slaves had to do physical labor this is all because the closer you are to white the more beautiful you are.

Black stereotypes stemed from Colorism

While Colorism is a biproduct of White supremacy , its not just a white thing, stereotypical characters like the sassy/funny black friend or the angry black woman is usually seen in black owned media. An great example of colorism is when Kanye West held a yeezy casting and asked for "multiracial women only" or when the casting for the show "Straight out of Compton" defined A girls as "The hottest of the hottest models with real hair" and D girls a "African American poor, not in good shape with a medium to dark skin tone" Wowwwwww, mind you these are all black people" another example of colorism is when black rapper kodak black said he doesn't date women of his own complexation because their "too gutter"

Another thing I had a problem with us how is "Fresh Prince of Bel-air" they replaced the dark skinned Aunt Viv with a much more lighter Aunt Viv, dot dot dot dot dot.

Colorism In Jamaica

Oh lordy, lordy, lord, Colorism is most active in Jamaica aka My home country, personally I have never faced racism because in Jamaica over 90% of the people or black, you barely see white people, The only times I've seen white people is when I got to a hotel, most white people in Jamaica are usually tourists', Anyway In Jamaica its said the lighter you are the more beautiful for example, Their are two dancehall artists Spice and Shenseea, Shenseea is said to be more beautiful than Spice because Shenseea is light skinned while spice is dark skinned.

Black People Hypocrisy

Were still talking about Jamaica here, Jamaicans are hypocrites , they are because in Jamaica if your too dark they're gonna tell you that you're ugly and you should "bleach" and when you bleach dem talk bout seh you ugly and you look like snake and basically they look down on you, Spice did and experiment where she used makeup to trick people into thinking she bleached her skin when she didn't just to see their reaction, people told her she shouldn't have done it and that she ugly and that she look like snake and lizard , mind you these were the same people who told her that her beautiful black skin was ugly and that she should bleach, That's why she released the song "Black Hypocrisy" that song really highlighted Colorism in not only Jamaica but the whole world, A lyric from that song captured this phenomenon perfectly, it goes "Cause the same black people dem seh I'm too black. And if yuh bleach out yuh skin dem same one come a chat"

My Personal Experience with Colorism

Listen, I am not white, there is not a trace of white in me, no one in my family is white, so pretty much you get that I'm black and being black aint easy because I've been told that I'm "too black" , when I take a step back and observe my class, I realized the girls with lighter skin had the boyfriends and the multiple crushes and they were seen as the most beautiful, the same thing goes for the boys, while the beautiful dark skinned girls were see as ugly or "ghetto" and that's not the only thing, Jamaicans look down on their own kind, the "blacker" you are the less fortunate you are.

In Conclusion, Colorism is just as bad as Racism, but everyone brush it off and say its a joke, when it isn't a joke its "Colorism" and Its just as damaging as Racism maybe even more because your getting hate from your own people, it was bad enough when it came from the other races but your OWN PEOPLE, c'mon man we can do better, we must do better, We are busy fighting ourselves and a kid just died on the street by a white policeman. Truth is colorism isn't only present in Black culture, Its there for people in all races, that are lighter, are treated better. Skinny people are treated nicer than heavier people. Tall men are treated nicer than short men. Rich people are treated nicer than poor people. We don't have any balance in this world, Burn racism, demolish colorism - Spice.
